Welcome to the Genesee Valley Chapter of SHRM!

As I’ve said many times, it is an exciting time to be a human resource professional! Read any news paper, business publication, employment-related web site, or business blog and you’ll understand what I mean.

As human resource professionals we have an opportunity to touch the lives of people every single day:

  • Many of you have had the unfortunate task of conducting reductions in force (RIF), handled them with understanding and compassion, and helped your fellow employees look to the future. Time and time again HR professionals are going above and beyond what is required in order to ease the burden of those being transitioned.
  • HR professionals from a variety of industries, backgrounds, and experiences are banding together to provide support, advice, and opportunities to their peers in transition.
  • Many of our colleagues have found creative and effective ways to keep people employed.

We’re also called upon to provide information and guidance in an ever-changing legal and regulatory environment:

  • We need to become experts on new laws like the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
  • New challenges seem to greet us every Monday morning, like the COBRA subsidy passed as part of the ARRA, the FMLA updates, and let us not forget the ability of NYS to throw a change or two our way!
  • If that’s not enough, we also need to keep updated on pending legislation like the Employee Free Choice Act.
  • And no discussion of HR knowledge would be complete without mentioning the landslide of potential changes we’ll face as a result of healthcare reform.

As HR professionals begin each new day there are a few things that remain constant; a new challenge we never considered, more work than we could ever accomplish in a day, and SHRM being the best resource for the answers we need. As SHRM members we have access to scores of experts, research, and solutions to address the challenges of our day.

Another resource you have is your GVCSHRM chapter. We offer monthly programs on timely and important topics and on October 1st we’re offering the first of what is planned to be an annual event – the HRochester Conference and Legislative Luncheon. Join us for a full day packed with information HR professionals need now. Click on the conference link for more information and to register for this exciting event. I’ll see you there!

Second Circuit Rules Reasonable Accommodation Must Be Provided, Even if Not Requested by Employee

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, employers are required to provide disabled employees with a reasonable accommodation when necessary to allow that employee to perform the essential duties of their position. Most teams contain a wide variety of personalities. These differences among team members can sometimes lead to conflicts that harm morale. If you ever have trouble keeping your cool with others, consider these points:

You don't have to be best buddies to work together. Although you might not pencil in some people on your social calen

Introduction to the Human Resources Discipline of Employee Benefits
Scope—The Benefits Discipline deals with the various forms of indirect employee compensation—commonly referred to as “benefits”—that employers use to attract, recognize and retain workers. It also includes matters that focus on benefits-related careers, communications, legal
